MUM Hosts Psychology Conference in Honor of Skip Alexander

October, 1998

Skip Alesander's legacy of ideas, books, articles, and research studies could fill many trunks. In his 20 years of research, he published over 80 articles. His impact on his peers, students, and anyone else who came into contact with him is immeasurable. The only proper tribute to so much creativity and good will is to propagate it. Hence the conference on the future of consciousness and psychology. It's just the sort of conference Skip would have loved and shined at.

The theme of the conference is consciousness as applied to psychology and covers such areas as developmental psychology, transpersonal psychology, criminal rehabilitation, organizational psychology, health psychology, and peace studies.

Many of the speakers who will come to honor Skip are top scholars from the leading universities in the country, such as Harvard, UCLA, and Princeton; top thinkers, including the director of research at the Noetic Sciences Institute; and a panel of Missouri judges. These judges have astounded the legal world by sentencing juvenile offenders to begin practice of Transcendental Meditation. Their presentations will be a definite highlight at the conference.

The conference will be held at Maharishi University of Management from Thursday evening, October 22, 1998, to Sunday noon on October 25.

The following is a partial list of speakers:

• Ellen Langer, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Chair, Social Psychology Program, Harvard University and author of a number of books including Mindfulness (translated into eight languages), The Power of Mindful Learning, and Higher Stages of Human Development: Perspectives on Adult Growth, edited with Dr. Alexander. Presentation Title: "Mindfulness: When West Meets East."

• Juan Pascual-Leone, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and senior member of the program in Developmental and Cognitive Processes, York University, Canada. Dr. Pascual-Leone is a leading developmental psychologist responsible for initiating the Neo-Piagetian movement and developing a dialectical constructivist approach to human development. Presentation Title: "Mental Attention, Consciousness, and the Progressive Emergence of Wisdom."

• Susanne Cook-Greuter, lic. phil. l., from the University of Zurich, co-edited a book entitled Transcendence and Mature Thought with Melvin Miller and is collaborating with him on a volume on spirituality and creativity. Presentation Title: "Experiencing the Limits of the Rational Mind at the Highest Stages of Ego Development: A Step Towards Ego-Transcendence?"

• Jeffrey C. Alexander, Ph.D., Professor and former Chair, Department of Sociology, UCLA, brother of Skip Alexander, and one of the leading theorists in the field of sociology.
